Fotovisura Gallery for Beauty and Wisdom
Here are some images from the Beauty and Wisdom series, which were submitted to the Fotovisura Grant for Outstanding Personal Project.
Music can take you on a journey, make you laugh, cry and touch the deepest part of your soul. So can a photograph. I come to photography as a musician, attracted to visual narratives that define an unsuspected beauty in a specific place in time. I am a champion of the overlooked, and see my photography as a way to research, create change and inject some beauty into the world.

Seven For Sandy
Hello family, friends and colleagues,
I returned from New York this past Friday. Fortunately, my family and friends were safe from the storm, but there were many along the East Coast and other areas that were not so lucky. As some of you know, I was born in Brooklyn, raised in Long Island and lived in Manhattan for 13 years. Nothing would make me happier than to utilize my work to generate funds to contribute to the relief from Hurricane Sandy in New York, a place I still consider to be my "hometown" and hold very dear to me. Here is a link to 7 images (Prints and Giclees) of my work that I am offering for purchase. I will donate 20% of all proceeds directly to charities set up by Mayor Mike Bloomberg within the 5 New York boroughs.
Click here ---> Seven For Sandy
The details are under each image and if you would like to purchase one you can send your payment directly to me at: robbiekaye@aol.com via PayPal. (Shipping is free!)
If you prefer, I accept credit - Email me and I'll send you my phone number to pay over the phone.

Fall Newsletter - Robbie Kaye
New York, Autumn Leaves |
Those Autumn Leaves...
Soon it will be the Autumnal Equinox and I love what new seasons represent...a new time and a new sense of place. Recently, I have begun experimenting with self-portraits. After fantasizing about all the beautiful places in the world that I would like to go and photograph, I decided that a good place to start would be right here, looking inside myself. I am also trying on another series and loving the process of collaboration as I photograph subjects of beauty and emotion in their purest essence. Click Here for a glimpse of that new work.Blossom, Long Island, New York |
The First Exhibit
It's been three years since I drove around the country photographing golden beauties in salons and my first solo exhibit of this work will be this month (Artist reception, September 22) in Portland, Oregon at Camerawork Gallery. The show will be up until October 19. I used to live in Portland and I feel a strong connection to the city, coast and country, so to have my first solo show there is very special to me. If you can't make it to the show, catalogs are available for purchase.
I am excited to report that a museum show is still in the works and I will keep you posted on dates for that.

Billie Jean, Provincetown |
This summer I received a scholarship for the narrative portrait workshop taught by Amy Arbus at The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown MA. The staff and facility were amazing. It was the most fulfilling week and I loved the challenge of creating a portrait series in four days. Ironically, I found myself taking photographs in a local salon, but this time not for Beauty and Wisdom. Also, as part of my project, I attended several cabarets shows and was completely impressed by the caliber of entertainment and the hard work that goes into these productions. In addition, I had the chance to view Amy's incredible new work from "After Images" and attended her talk at The Schoolhouse Gallery. I enjoyed commingling with other photographers, painters, writers, print-makers and poets... it was wonderful to be part of an artist colony, even for a short time. I was delighted to have the image from my series for class make it to the cover of the Provincetown Banner special events section and a little blurb on the inside of the paper.
When a friend suggested that I read "Shaping Destiny" by artist and author, Destiny Allison I did... in two days, because I could not bring myself to stop reading. I contacted Destiny on Facebook and told her how her book had changed the way I look at life and art and several months later she traveled from Santa Fe and gave an incredible talk full of honesty and inspiration at my house. Not one person left without a book. Good news that she will be back for another inspirational evening at Jeanie Madsen Gallery in October. Meanwhile, you can see her beautiful work on her website and visit her blog, Shaping Destiny: A quest for meaning in art and life.
A New Beautiful
In the month of October, Jeanie Madsen, owner of the Jeanie Madsen Gallery, will be producing amazing events that promote healthy self-esteem and self-image for teenaged girls to women in their 90's. I am so delighted to be part of this 'bridging the gap' project and to be included in the group show, "A New Beautiful," which opens Saturday, October 6th. It will be one powHERful month at the gallery. Check out the calendar of upcoming events and stay tuned for information about "Collaboration," another group show taking place in January. I am so excited to be collaborating with the fabulous mixed media and jewelry designer, Jennifer Verge for this group exhibit.

Day 51 - Getting my Head on
Yesterday I told a friend how early I wake up. She said she could never get up that early (6 AM) and I told her I had to get up that early to put my head on. Used to be getting up early to put my "make-up" on.
This is a pic from our tent room where we meditate daily... I am grateful beyond words for this sacred peaceful space where we hear birds, see trees and where hummingbirds and butterflies come to visit.

Day 49 - Me & Luna
Hanging out in the Hangar while Dave goes flying. Luna wants to play ball 24/7. She teaches me all about playing and unconditional love.
Day 48 - Modern Cowgirl
This is Holly. She lives in Santa Paula on a ranch. She's beautiful, smart and friendly... We stopped on the road to admire her beautiful oak tree and chairs and she drove her tractor over to say hello. In a very short time we got to know each other... We love meeting people on the road.
Day 47 - About Town
It's so easy to take the palm trees for granted. I remember as a kid... Living in New York, I was so infatuated with them.... Every now and then, I look up and think, "wow, I live in California."

Day 46 - Watering
Watching the trees and grass get watered gave me a feeling like a mom watching their child eat and infesting nutrition. Diana Clark, my first spiritual Guru in Portland, taught me that we are all connected...to everything. That was in 1996 or so....not even 20 years ago. It was a pretty big revelation being I was a city girl who had just moved there from Manhattan. And now, I am happiest in the presence of these precious plants and trees... Anywhere in nature and I feel like I am "home."

Day 45 - From the Sky
I flew with Dave today - which was getting over a hurdle for me. Smooth ride - gorgeous view... Beautiful hot air balloons.

Day 43 - Humanity
Today I walked by a house and the family just moved in. The gardener stopped to let me and the dogs pass by and during that time the man of the house came out introduced himself to the gardener and offered him a bottle of water. Humanity exists right here in my neighborhood and that's beautiful.

Day 44 - Peace
After a couple anger alignment sessions (good talks with good friends) I feel more at peace today. Maybe that's why I'm wearing white? I really like the concept of the self-portrait and after watching "The Woodman's" I am even more inspired to work on a self-portrait series, maybe a few.
I'm excited to receive my wireless remote that I ordered yesterday. It's not that different looking at a self-portrait than it is a flower image taken with a macro lens.... If done effectively, the viewer will feel up close and personal with the subject... Maybe even more so since there is expressive content through the body or face or environment. A self-portrait can tell an entire story if it's that good ...and that's what I aspire to.

Day 43 - Anger
Getting in touch with anger is fascinating to me. I never know I'm really angry until I feel it in an exaggerated way. I haven't been angry in a long time, but I'm angry now at the behavior of someone I know. I know this will pass and I will be able to let go of them with love if they are not willing to work things through, but sometimes, after all these years of living, it still astounds me how some people think their hurtful behavior is ok and how they are blind to their own unkindness. I am grateful for the reminder to stay focused on and in my own life...for that is the only thing I can control. I feel better already.
Day 41- Differences
The sky was so beautiful. High strewn clouds against a very blue back drop. It reminded me of the contrast needed to understand ourselves and others.

Day 40 - Roses
My husband bought me 6 rose bushes to plant for our anniversary. One for every year. Here is the bloom from one of them.

Day 37 - Reflecting
So much is unfolding... Now is a good time for silence. As David Ji says, "Fill what is empty, empty what is full."
